Eight Kung Fu Steps

(2023). Hung Gar is a Southern Chinese martial arts style renowned for its rooted stances and emphasis on drawing power from the ground up. The focus of this work was on presence, grounding, and what remains.

The number eight—considered auspicious in Chinese culture—guided the structure of the piece. Eight forms were conducted to leave an impression on the earth: a physical trace of movement, energy, and discipline. These footprints, fleeting but real, became a kind of historical document, mapping the body’s complex relationship to place, practice, and tradition.

Rather than spectacle, Eight Kung Fu Steps offers a quiet meditation on transience, power, and the marks we leave behind—seen or unseen.
