The toilet was built on contaminated land in South East London; leased temporarily to a community eco-project. The surroundings were of building sites, vandalism and strong winds. So what better way to add to this exciting landscape than design a compost toilet along the lines of Brutalism.
I built a platform in a gallery for people to look at things. I gave them binoculars so they can look at things more closely. I think places where people stand and look offers contemplation. I made such a place where that moment of looking for something is captured.
The New Cross structure is a homage to the times I have spent in New Cross, London. Over the years I would travel through New Cross and draw abstract details of the things I would see.
